“Snow? Is that even possible in March?” asked Cassidy, brushing off the snow from the outside of the window. She was getting a ride from Morgan today, and more than anything she just wasn’t in the mood for school.
“I suppose, its here isn’t it?” Morgan retorted, in a isn’t-it-obvious? Kind of voice.
Cassidy didn’t bother to reply, after all Morgan was just being Morgan, and she wasn’t going to risk riding her bike three miles in this mess. The wind was barreling on through, and making her arms colder than the inside of a freezer. Finally brushing the last of it, out of the way, she hopped inside the small VMW, and turned on the heater.
“What grade are you in again?” Morgan asked, putting the car in drive.
“Very funny Morgs. Are you mad at me today or something?” Cassidy replied, taking her gloves, and enclosing them the compartment under the dashboard.
“Maybe.” Morgan said bitterly back.
“WWYBMASID?” Cassidy said cleverly.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Morgan snapped, abruptly stopping on her breaks.
“Don’t you still use text talk?!” Cassidy said, doubting she even remembered her birthday anymore. How could one summer away from Waiter way Falls have such an effect on one friendship?
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Morgan scowled. Her cheeks bursting with anger.
“Just tell me already! Where we can make up, hug and do each other’s nails in Mr. Pollini’s class again without getting caught?” Cassidy yelled.
“You really don’t know do you?” Morgan asked, getting angrier by the second, as Cassidy shook her head no. “Well lets see… hmm… where do I start? First you go off on a huge trip to some island, without me! Then, you tell me you’ll call me, and you avoid all of my calls. Then you come back and expect me to forgive you, and you play dumb about it!!! How’s that for an explanation?!” Morgan screamed, almost running off the road.
“I… I’m sorry Morgan I didn’t think you minded…”
“Oh really? Then why didn’t you even ask me before you left?” Morgan said, tears now flowing.
“Is there anything I can do?…”
“Yeah, there is something you can do!” She yelled.
“Okay? And?” Cassidy smiled.
“Leave me the heck alone!” She screamed, running them straight into a ditch, and they smacked head on with another car, shattering the windows, and the windshield. They didn’t even have time to scream before…
***
“Where’s Morgan?!” Cassidy yelled in a voice she didn’t quite recognize. She was sitting up in a hospital bed, with people she didn’t even remember looking all sad, and like they were about to cry. Out of all of the faces, Cassidy could pick out one that was familiar though. Her mom.
“Wh- what just happened?” Cassidy stuttered, and stared into the eyes of her mother, who right now looked extremely vulnerable. And, compared to her normal, and amazingly perky self, this was weird. A few women burst into sobs, and Morgan’s dad as well. It took about three minutes of utter confusion before she finally spoke.
“Cassidy… died in the accident yesterday.” A nurse said, grabbing her arm, and checking on her IV.
“What are you guys talking about? I’m right here! Where’s Morgan?” She said again, madder this time. Was this all a big joke? Why did that nurse just say she was dead? Morgan was fine, she just knew it…right?
A few people shook their head like somehow she was the circus freak who had no idea what she was talking about. “You don’t believe me do you? I’m Cassidy!” She tried again, and her mom burst into loud sobs. “Whats wrong mom?” She asked in a hurt tone.
The nurse took her head in her hands, and shook it around a bit. What was she doing anyway? “Her head seems fine, she’s probably just in shock.” The nurse said to Morgan’s parents. And, suddenly Morgan’s mom rushed up to meet her acting as though Cassidy really was Morgan!
“God, I’m so glad your okay!” Morgan’s mom said, and hugged her tightly.
“Umm thanks Mrs. Cowley but shouldn’t you be with Morgan?” Cassidy asked confused.
She just looked back at her in a confused way, and walked off crying louder than mom. What was happening? Was Morgan really dead? And if so, why was everyone calling her Morgan. One thing she was sure of, was she was really Cassidy Burkes, and that was the only thing she knew anymore…
