It was a normal summer day. Sunny, with some clouds, later in the day brought showers and rain. But, that didn't matter to me. It's 11:30 at night, the darkness brought cool air with it. Turning my living room from a boiling hell pit to a nice, cool room.
"Okay, I love you too. Sleep well, I'll talk to you tomorrow." I said into the phone, my girl friend on the other end. Pressing the end button on the phone I set it down. Leaning back in my chair I smiled. Then, a bang. From where? The sound wasn't too out of the ordinary, I live across the street from the ghetto. Looking at the window I saw nothing, nothing back the pitch black darkness of the night, dimly lit by the street lights going up and down the street. Turning my body back to the computer in front of me I saw it, out of the corner of my eye. A shell, the first of many to hit the city. Realizing what it was moments after I brought my arms up to the side of my face.
Hitting the side of my house, or at least close to it, bits of metal, glass, and wood was hurled toward my body. Ripping into my arms, head, the left side of my torso and my left leg, knocking my body off of the chair and onto the floor. My lower body on the softer, carpet floor, my upper body hitting the hard wood kitchen flooring. Hard. Shaking me up even more. My heart beat was loud, dulling out everything but the loud ringing in both of my ears. My eyes lids heavy, barely staying open for me.
Pulling myself against the door frame that separated the living room and kitchen, I let my body lay back against it. Bringing my hands to view, chunks of shrapnel through my hands, and arms. Blood running down them as well. Although I can't feel it, nor can I feel the blood on my face, my palms barely touched I begin to touch my face, feeling the shrapnel in the left side of my head; although not much of it.
The ringing in my ears died down, or seemed to, since my heart beat was getting much louder. My vision getting darker, my eyelids were even heavier, and everything seemed to be fading out. Then, I saw a bright light. 'No!' Was my first thought, but then I noticed it was coming from outside. Looking over I saw the van my mom drives, my family was home. 'Yes!' I thought, the word echoing through my mind as my eyes forced themselves shut. Was this going to be the end? I hope not... I still have so much to do...
