“Come on…” whispered the man to himself. He wanted to be done with this already. With Jason out of the picture, she would be his again. He still couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to go on a date out here on a golf course next to the bay, much less go on a date with Jason. “Why couldn’t I have seen their obvious feelings for each other in high school?” he kept drowning on to himself. It seemed most obvious now, watching them cuddle and kiss and… it was unbelievable.
But, Jason didn’t disappoint. He finally, after five hours, got done with his date with Karen. It was, as cheesy as it sounded to him, a dream come true. In high school he had always wanted to hook up with Karen. Being 23, he felt like seventeen again while on the date. Too bad Jason’s dream was his last…
9:30 pm, Friday August 7, 2009 San Francisco’s City Hall meeting room
“I need these new CSIs!” argued Steven Gellar. “I had to fire every last one of them, for tampering with evidence on the case last week with that drug dealer. I have selected the best of the neighboring counties. A supervisor from Alameda, two field agents in San Jose…” “But how much will this cost captain?” questioned Lenard Fremont, the head chairman of the city’s budget plans. “We may not be able to pay for a new group…” “Then ask the State for additional funds if you must. The case will go cold if we can’t close it this weekend. Besides, it’s bad publicity for San Francisco and the Lincoln Park golf course. Without that course, which I will remind you is found next to ideal tourist spots, will discourage golfers and potential tourist from coming. You know as well as I do, that they’ll slip out of your hands, and spend their time up in the Sierras at Lake Tahoe...” “Fine, captain… you’ve made your point. We will “consult” with the state, and your CSI will commence their shift immediately.”
10:00 pm, Lincoln Park Golf Course
Ryan Reynolds pulled up into the parking lot in his beat up Chevy pickup. He felt kind of lonely without White-Out, his Husky that he brought with to San Francisco. She’d be fine at the station though. Besides, it had been a while since he had been out in the field again. Being a supervisor had its perks, but he liked being in sync with cases. He walked over with his Crime Scene kit in hand, to Cpt. Gellar who was waiting at the sixteenth hole, close to the El Camino del Mar. The traffic was backed up and extremely loud, with the sound of engines and angry drivers. Lying in a pool of blood was young male (Ryan figured he was in his twenties). He was flat on his back, with particles from the sand pit on the right side of his face. “Looks like he didn’t make it through the back nine.” remarked Ryan. “Yeah… your victim is a Jason A. Mazen .Judging by what security cameras showed though, he made a hole in one tonight with a Karen Hendric. She says she knew the victim in high school and they were reunited on an internet dating service. She says she was getting ready to leave when she heard a yell. She came out here and found him like this.” replied Officer Steven. “Well, this is rather “amazing” don’t you think?” exclaimed a woman about 5’5” with brown hair followed closely by a Hispanic 4’5” male approached the two. “Hey, I’m Carey and this is Joe, we’re the ones from San Diego. I’ll take a look at the victim. Joe, you check out the surrounding area” “I’ll join you Carey.” Ryan added.
“The victim has an obvious concussion to the head, which would explain the majority of the blood. There also appears to be some cuts and lacerations on the body. This suggests an accident.” observed Carey. “So you’re saying it was a possible “hit and run”… so to speak?” asked Ryan doubtingly. “Well… worker or vandal drives the cart around, isn’t paying attention, hits the victim.” “Ah, but there weren’t any tire tread marks, and the carts are always locked up when they close.” Joe calls out, “Hey guys! There’s a large hole in the chain link fence over here, and it leads out to the street. I cans see distinct tire marks.” Ryan had suspected something like this. “Here’s how it happened. Our victim gets done with his evening of romance. Walking back he’s approached by the killer. They argue, and the victim puts up his dukes, but the perpetrator brought a golf club to a fist fight. Victim is stuck, falls, and slowly bleeds to death with damage to the brain tissue, leaving him unconscious.” explained Ryan. “Yeah, we’ll just see.”
“Ryan? I’m looking for my supervisor Ryan Reynolds?” Ryan looked up to see a very attractive brunette woman. She had long silky hair, and blue eyes that almost sparkled. “Ryan? Ryan!” exclaimed Carey. Ryan snapped out of it enough to reply, “I’m Ryan Reynolds. Nice to meet you.” and shook her hand. It felt soft and smooth against his rough hands. “I’m Renee Rainin, the crime scene expert from the San Joaquin County.” “Good. It’s kind of late now; I think we’ve got everything we’ll need for now. The body will need to head to autopsy, and the scene will need to be photographed.” “I found something you guys missed.” replied Renee staring off behind Ryan. She walked over to the green of the sixteenth hole, bent down, and pulled out a beer can from the hole. “We now have saliva and or skin to reference and…” Renee pulled out a dusting kit from her CSI vest pocket, and dusted the shiny can. “…a set of prints.” Ryan knew that he would enjoy working with Renee.
12:30 p.m., Police Station on the corner of Bay and Hyde Street
“Well, it’s true that your victim died from blunt force trauma, but not a golf club Mr. …” “Reynolds, Ryan Reynolds, and you?” “Will Druids. I’ve been working at the coroner’s office for thirty years.” replied the rather old and wrinkled man. He was a rather dignified looking elder, and didn’t seem to appalling except for the blood stains on his scrubs and gloves. “As I was saying, the smoking gun wasn’t a “direct” hit from a club. The indentation on the skull is too small and curved. More likely, this was a…” “Death-by-golf-ball”. Finished Renee, giving an “I told you so” look at Ryan. “Correct. Now there are some broken ribs and bruising that suggests he was run into by a fast moving object, but it wasn’t enough to kill him.” “So there isn’t any chance there was a direct conflict with the murderer and the victim?” Ryan asked hopefully. “Well, I did take a look at the victim’s finger nails and found no skin, but I did find something else rather interesting with your victim.” he reassured Ryan and Renee. He turned around to a silvery table behind him. “I extracted this from the victim’s mouth, of all places.” and held up a picture of a large group of teens all smiling. On said picture, Jason’s face has been crossed out, and an arrow pointing to him said in big letters “CHOKE ON THIS.” “Someone had a grudge...” answered Renee. “…and a motive.” added Ryan. “I’ll give this to Joe. Maybe one of these students is our killer. Thanks Doc.”
5:45 a.m., 465 Lincoln Way
“Mr. Jack Derby, this is police, we need to speak with you sir.” yelled Officer Steven. There was no reply. Steven signaled to another officer, and slowly pushed Carey back. The officer kicked the door in, and hustled through. “Come out with your hands on your head Derby.” As the officer continued to search the apartment, Carey noted how much clutter was all over the rooms. Bottles of alcohol on the floor and counters. Papers and trash scattered everywhere. “We got him!” cried out an officer. The group of uniformed police went by Carey holding a white man of about 5’6”. He had a face without any expression. His brown and blonde bangs secluded his dark blue eyes. “We’re heading back to the station to interrogate Jack. You check out the apartment.” Offended that Steven seemingly felt that he had to explain her job retorted, “Is that a way of saying that you think I’m stupid?” “It’s a way of letting you know that we’re going, and I hope you’ll be okay with being left with two officers. I’m not one to be prejudice Carey. I should hope you take note of that.” Replied Steven coolly. As he left, Carey felt hurt and foolish for making such an accusation. When she was in San Diego, treatment like that was twenty four seven. Getting used to San Francisco would take some change.
6:25 a.m., Interrogation Room
Ryan quietly stepped into the room, and sat down at a chair on the opposite side of Jack Derby. “Jack Derby… you’ve had quite a lifetime.” Ryan said softly. Jack only stared at the center of the table. “Born to a father who was arrested for wife beating, your mother gave you up to your aunt. From there you ran away to your grandparents in Oakland California.” continued Ryan, noting that Jack still had the same reaction. “That’s when you went to high school… played baseball as a pitcher… “ still no reaction. “… and met Karen.” As soon as Ryan mentioned Karen, Jack looked up at him. Jack’s eyes were tear filled and irritated, as if he had been crying. “Why did Karen leave?” asked Ryan softly. “She didn’t leave. I left… I left because she wanted me to.” He replied in a hoarse voice. “I loved Karen so much, that I wanted her to be happy. So I left.” “But you followed her didn’t you? You found out a few months ago that she was in San Francisco, and that she had met your ex best friend… Jason-“ “He wasn’t right for Karen. I would know. Jason was weak and spineless! He could never be the man for Karen-“ “But you could?” “YES!” yelled Jack, slamming his fist on the table. There was quiet for some time. “Look what you did though Jack.” Ryan explained, pulling out the pictures of Jason. “You drove into the person who made her happy the most… Jason. Then you finished the job, by throwing a golf ball at his head… you killed Jason, and you killed Karen’s love.” Jack looked back down and sobbed. Ryan left the interrogation room.
8:30 a.m., Ryan’s Office
“So. Although we won’t need it after that confession from Mr. Derby, I found the golf ball in Jack’s apartment and lots of pictures of Karen and Jason.” Carey stated to Ryan and the team. “I’m beat.” Joe exclaimed exhausted. “Yeah, but a good days work right?” Renee asked. Everyone except Ryan and Renee groaned. “There is one more thing. I know we must have all gotten off to a bad start, but I hope we can all put that behind us. After all, we have an entire city of crime that needs help, and with all of us together, we can do this.” Ryan stated supportively. There was a long pause. “You know what… lets all head down to O Reilly’s and get to know each other?” offered Ryan. There was still quiet. “The drinks are on me.” Ryan tempted. Everyone got up and started to head for the door. Ryan smiled, and walked over to his coat rack. As he slipped on his coat, he saw a small box next to it. He bent down to open it. He looked inside. His facial expression became confused and intrigued. “I need to get this to Will!” Ryan exclaimed, and quickly strode off to the coroner’s office.
