Everyday, I stood in front of the mirror, and everyday the reflection never changed. There stood a tall pale girl, with a sad look plastered upon her face. Her grey skin had released the glow it once possessed, leaving it dull and cold. Her once broad and strong shoulders now slumped with grief, holding on to her long weak arms. She stood, unmoving, starring back at me, with green eyes that screamed and pleaded for help, and her brown hair fell with heaps onto her shoulders. This girl had once been beautiful, but I could vaguely remember seeing it. People once embraced her with love, but the memories could not come to my mind.
“What happened to you?” I’d ask her. The thin pink flesh that had once been beautiful red lips, now turned down in a sad frown, asking me the same question.
“I don’t know…” She answered back one day with a quiet voice. It was raspy, and sounded like her throat was sore, but really I knew it was from all the screaming she did. I knew she couldn’t help it, because I knew the same pain that she endured day after day. I don’t know how she coped with it, but we did it together.
“Look at what you’ve become” I sneered at her with depressed mockery. Her lips moved in time with mine, scolding me as well. “You’re nothing”
I reached my hand forward, to press it to the cold hard glass that separated us. She reached her hand out to touch mine, but was stopped by the glass. She franticly reached with the other hand, and I followed, desperate for her touch, but we were again parted.
“I need you” I wailed, my voice quivering with desperation. I saw a tear escape the corner of her eye, and watched at it rolled down her sunken cheeks, only to rest on her bottom lip. I could moisture on my own, but didn’t bother wiping it away, in fear that my hands would be shaking too badly. Her thin lips curled in a small smile, showing deep sympathy for me, and more tears rolled down her face, making her dull eyes shine. Soon, both our cheeks were wet with moisture.
“I can help you” She whispered, leaning in to me. I leaned in too, waiting to feel out faces touch, but they never did. Instead, she pressed her quivering lips to the cold glass, where my cheek would have been and promised me;
“I will help you, soon enough, my darling Jane. I promise to make the pain go away” she said with a sad nod of her head. With misery filling my heart, I watched her walk away, before I collapsed on the ground, my chest shaking with sobs. I curled my arms around my small knees, and pulled them into the cavity of my chest, rocking back and forth.
I will help you, her voice whispered in the back of my mind, and we’ll escape the pain together.
