CHAPTER 2
EMILY HAD BEEN LYING IN BED FOR ALMOST AN HOUR, CONSTINTETLY THINKING ABOUT THAT BOY THAT HAD SAVED HER FROM THE GIANT BEAST NEARLY 10 HOURS BEFORE.
WHO WAS HE? WHERE DID HE GO? I WONDER IF ILL EVER SEE HIM AGAIN . . . PROBABLY NOT, AFTER WHAT HAPPENED TODAY, I DOUBT HE’S GONNA HAVE ANY REASON TO COME BACK. SHE THOUGHT TO HERSELF. SHE SHIVERED AS IF A PRESENCE HAD JUST PASSED BY HER. SHE SAT UP IN HER BED AND STEARED AT THE WALL IN FRONT OF HER, A SLIGHTLY CONFUSED LOOK ON HER FACE. IT WAS THEN THAT A BLACK CIRCLE APPEARED ON HER WALL, AND WITH IT, THE BOY THAT SAVED HER HOURS BEFORE STEPPED FROM IT. EMILY LOOKED AT THE BOY IN STUNNED SILENCE. THE ONLY SOUND IN THE ROOM WAS THE SOUND OF EMILY’S DEEP BREATHING. THE BOY LIFTED HIS HEAD AND MET EMILY’ EYES.
“SO . . . I FOUND YOU.” HE SAID IN A STERN VOICE. EMILY SWALLOWED HARD, HER MOUTH FELT AS DRY AS A DESERT.
“W-WHO ARE YOU?” EMILY ASKED IN A FRIGHTENED TONE. THE BOY LOOKED AWAY AND WALKED TO THE WINDOW, HIS ARMS BEHIND HIS BACK. HE LOOKED UP AT THE MOON AND OPENED HIS MOUTH O ANSWER.
“MY NAME . . . IS DAVID, I AM THE ONE WHO SAVED YOU EARLIER TODAY.” HE ANSWERED.
“W-WHAT WAS THAT THING THAT YOU SAVED ME FROM?” EMILY ASKED IN A LESS FRIGHTENED TONE, WHICH SOUNDED ALITTLE MORE DETERMINED.
“THAT THING HAS MANY NAMES DEPENDING ON WHAT CULTURE YOU’RE ASKING, BUT, ITS TRULY KNOWN AS, A DEMON, SUCH AS MYSELF, WARRIORS OF THE UNDERWORLD, WHOS ONLY PURPOSE IS TO SERVE THEIR MASTER.” HE SAID IN A SOME WHAT ANGRY TONE.
“WELL, IF YOU’RE A DEMON TOO, WHY DID YOU SAVE ME AND KILL THAT DEMON OR WHATEVER IT IS?”
“THAT QUESTION IS HARDER TO ANSWER, LET’S JUST SAY . . . I DON’T EXACTLY SEE EYE TO EYE WITH THE, DEVIL, AS YOU CALL IT.”
“OH, I SEE” THEIR CONVERSATION CARRIED ON FOR A WHILE. UNTIL EMILY FELT A STRANGE SCENCE OF UN-EASINESS. EMILY’S EYES WENT WIDE WITH CONCERN. DAVID CAUGHT ON TO HER CONCERN QUICKLY.
“WHAT, WHAT IS IT, WHAT DO YOU FEEL?” HE ASKED. EMILY TURNED HER HEAD TO THE DOOR.
“I-I DON’T KNOW, IT FEELS LIKE . . . AN EVIL AURA IS COMING THIS WAY.” SHE ANSWERED. SHE LOOKED BACK AT DAVID AND MET HIS EYES. “WHAT IS IT?” DAVID SMIRKED IN SATISFACTION.
“THE EVIL, AURA, THAT YOU’RE FEELING IS THE DARK ENERGY THAT DEMONS RELEASE WHEN EVER THEY GET NEAR A LIGHT BEING, OR AN ANGELIC BEING, SUCH AS YOUR SELF.” HE EXPLAINED. EMILY LOOKED AT HIM IN BOTH A SCENCE OF SHOCK, AND JOY. SHE OPENED HER MOUTH TO ASK DAVID SOMETHING, BUT HE CUT HER OFF.
“YES, THAT DOES MEAN THAT ARE INDEED AN ANGEL.” AS HE SAID THAT, HE ALLOWED A SMALL SMILE TO APPEAR ON HIS FACE. IT WAS THEN THAT THEY BOTH HEARD A SCREECH THAT WAS LOUD ENOUGH TO SEND A CHILL UP YOUR SPINE, MAKE YOUR BLOOD CURDLE, AND RATTLE YOUR EVERY BONE. THEY BOTH WENT WIDE EYED AT THAT MOMENT.
“OH MY GOD TH-THAT WAS MY . . . MOM!!!” EMILY YELLED IN FEAR. THEY BOTH RAN DOWN THE STAIRS SO FAST THEY LOOKED LIKE TWO BLURS, ONE BLUR AS BLACK AS NIGHT, AND THE OTHER AS WHITE AS NEWLY FALLEN SNOW. THEY STOPPED IN THE KITCHEN TO FIND A HALF OF THE WALL MISSING. EMILY WAS THE FIRST TO NOTICE HER MOTHER ON THE FLOOR NEXT TO THE FRIDGE.
“MOM? MOM!” EMILY YELLED AS SHE RAN TO HER MOTHER’S SIDE. “MOM, MOM PLEASE WAKE UP . . . MOM PLEASE.” EMILY SAID AS TEAR STARTED TO WELL UP IN HER EYES. SHE PLACES TWO FINGERS ON HER MOTHER’S THROAT. “SHE’S JUST UNCONCIOSE.” SHE LET OUT A SIGH OF RELIEF. “I’M JUST GLAD SHE’S NOT DEAD” AS EMILY SAT WITH HER UNCONCIOSE MOTHER, DAVID LOOKED AROUND THE REST OF THE HOUSE.
HMM . . . THE DEMONS GONE, STRANGE. HE THOUGHT TO HIMSELF. DAVID RETURNED TO THE KITCHEN WHERE EMILY STOOD LOOKING DOWN SADLY AT HER UNCONCIOSE MOTHER. DAVID’S EXPRESSION SADENED SOME. HE PLACED A CARING HAND ON EMILY’S SHOLDER.
“EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT, YOU’LL SEE, I PROMISE.” HE SAID SOFTLY. EMILY TURNED HER HEAD TOWARD HIM AND MET HIS EYES, A TEAR MAKING ITS WAY DOWN HER CHEEK, AND OFFERED HIM A SMALL SMILE. DAVID SMILED BACK. “BUT, FOR RIGHT NOW, WE MUST GET YOUR MOTHER TO THE HOSPITAL.” EMILY NODDED LOOKED BACK DOWN TO HER MOTHER.
“DON’T WORRY MOM, YOU’RE GONNA BE OK, JUST HANG IN THERE.” SHE SAID SOFTLY. SHE GRABBED HER HOME PHONE FROM ITS CRADLE AND DIALED 911.
IT WAS TWENTY MINUTES BEFORE THE AMBULANCE CAME. THE MEDICS REFUSED TO LET EMILY GO WITH HER MOTHER. SO SHE STAYED BACK WITH DAVID.
“SHE’LL BE ALRIGHT EMILY, DON’T WORRY.” DAVID SAID IN A CARING VOICE.
“I HOPE YOU’RE RIGHT, AND I ALSO HOPE GOD WILL DESTROY WILL WHATEVER DID THIS TO HER.” SHE SAID IN A TONE OF SADNESS AND ANGER MIXED.
“HMM, WELL IF GOD DOESN’T . . . I WILL, THIS, I PROMISE YOU.” HE SAID WITH HIS APPARENTLY NORMAL, SOMBER LOOK, APPEARING ON HIS FACE AGAIN. “I’LL BE SEEING YOU AROUND EMILY, GOODBYE.” HE SAID TURNING AROUND TO LEAVE. EMILY TURNED ASWELL.
“OH, OK, BYE DAVID. SEE YO AROUND.” SHE SAID SOUNDING HAPPIER THAN SAD OR ANGRY.
