It was almost too joyous for my heart to bear,
When she came to me,
With the vibrant flowers in her hair
And said that, in her eyes, only I she would see
Her heart was rushed, as did mine,
When I fumbled with my ring and took a knee.
She lived on one side of the grove, and I the other
Our lives were as separate as two sides of the sea
The lords crushed our hopes of ever being loved
But I knew she and I would forever be
I and my Alice would be hand in hand
Until the wrath of God separated her and me
It was my foolishness that led others to believe
In the love we shared, Alice and me
Talk through our lands reached our lords
Our best of friends told us to abandon hope and flee
But I said Nay!
Nay to all that would end our glee
Nay to those who sought our love harm
My Alice looked back at me
Her hands trembled in my own
I looked back at her and said they will let us be
Others took a frown and nod to leave us in peace
That night, the moon glared with fire at the sea
The lords and their soldiers looked to our home
It was oh so too dark to see
The clouds seemed to frown upon us mortals
Swords and spears pointed at my Alice and me
When the stars shown light, with all their might
I held the hand of my Alice
When lords, hearts with hate, condemned our fate
I held the hand of my Alice
I was her groom, and she was my bride.
Together we will be, side by side
In the grove that looks over our palace
In the tomb I shall be, with my sweet Alice
