I was laying in bed, but I couldn't sleep. The storm raged outside, and I couldn't decide--should I tell Edward about his child? What would he do if he knew?
I am falling asleep, and I believe at first that I am having another dream of the impossible: Edward, coming to my cell, comforting and apologizing to me. But a flash of lightning jolts me awake, and reveals the man to be Sir Jacob.
What he tells me turns my body to ice, and my face white. I hadn't believe he would carry out that threat... But there was no questioning Jacob's severe expression. Immediately I knew what I had to do.
I did not cry. I did not scream. I got out of bed and stood, wrapping my shoddy blanket around me.
"Let us go, then."
I realized I could not leave these people behind, these loyal subjects who had risked their lives to help me in my most desperate hour. I looked at each of them sternly: the nurse, the guard, the noble, the boy waiting in the rain.
"Please, all of you. I would be honored to take you with me, if you still wish to serve your Queen. Otherwise I shall leave you here, and will forget everything."
The guard bows. "I would be honoroed, Majesty....but I do not want to hold you back. You need to leave as quickly as possible."
But his face decided it. He was scared for his life, yet determined.
"If you wish, you will come with us." My tone left no room for objections.
The guard grabbed his horse from the dungeon stables. The other stables were being searched. I rode behind Jacob, Faye behind the guard, and little Isaac on his pony. We rode hard, the rain and wind soaking us. My hair flew pink and tangled behind me, until at last I directed Jacob to my old headquarters.
We all disembarked, weary and frightened. I ran into the old house, barely able to control my fear anymore.
"Your Highness!" a voice called from the dark front room.
I hugged him, disregarding my sanctity in my near-hysteria. "Lord Philip! You're all right!"
Then I could not stop myself--I burst into tears. The only one to ever see me behind my queenly facade, besides my husband, quickly and gently pulled me into my room before the others came in and saw my disgrace. He whispered, "Good night, Your Highness. I'll take care of them" and shut the door.
I could not think of anything but that night that started all of this.
