Madness, or insanity seem to be a big problem in the world of Soul Eater. As it seems- insanity is taken very seriously- with Shibusen's, "Remaining the Status Quo" job, the organization tries to prevent madness - as well as Kishins. As we've seen with Asura - Kishin's can produce Madness Wavelengths, which seem to awaken the madness that dwells with in a person. Though - it doesn't seem to corrupt some people, such as Justin, in the beginning. Well- unless you count chapter 60!Justin - who has actually been following the madness and worship Asura.

But what about Franken Stein?

Stein seems incredibly prone to madness - given he harbored it since he was young(shown in a conversation with Medusa during their battle). Given, as shown in this piece of dialogue- the madness did expand and stay with him from his child years;

"As I matured and grew stronger, the bounds of madness inside me expanded. Do you know what it was that stopped me?" - Episode 23

But does he enjoy the idea of it?

In my opinion- no. He seems to hate it- maybe even just the struggle. I believe he knows the consequences and fears it, shown in this bit of dialogue;

"Yes, I was afraid. Afraid of what kind of person I would become." - Episode 23

At that time, he was aware of what the madness could do to the state of his mind, even if just a bit. If he were to sink so far down into the drowning pool of insanity- there could be a monster itching in the back of his skull- eagerly trying to claw it's way out and wash over him, take the reigns to his actions and thoughts. That monster could possibly even be dissection-crazed, dismembering anything in his path for possible enjoyment. And I don't mean dissection-crazed as when he enjoys studying for knowledge as he does when sane- I mean becoming more of some kind of psychopathic killer.

Insanity seems to be a difficult battle for him to fight- shown a bit in episode 28(?) of Arachne's awakening, when he speaks to Shinigami-sama, as the Herectic Witch's wide mass of madness spreads, Stein seems to be struggling trying to repel it back and try it keep it dormant. He seems to be gnawing on his lower lip, somewhat staggering trying to win over it. In episode 33 he seems to have been fighting it during the Chain-Resonance training, because as soon as he gets away from his students when he tells them to, "cool off", he slouches against and tree, panting and sweating, wondering why the madness is progressing so quickly. Another sign of struggle.

A side effect of madness seems to make people hallucinate- probably to make their sanity crumble gradually, which causes the doctor himself to hallucinate namely of 'Rave Spiders" and Medusa Oh, Ohkubo~. He hallucinates in episode 33 twice- first in his bathroom, where as he tries to calm himself was washing his face as well as cranking his bolt. As he looks towards the mirror- his reflection is that of his Kishin form, which grabs his throat in an attempt to choke him- only to have Stein smash the mirror and stumble back. Again, there's some dialogue that may hint he doesn't want to fall into the madness;

"Give me a break... I still have things to do. I can't fall apart yet..."

What interests me is the word choice of "yet".

It makes me wonder if he actually does want to fall into the madness.

But again- he doesn't seem pleased with falling into it- accordingly he still has, "things to do".

He hallucinates once more in this episode, right before Maka talks to him. His hallucination this time is being wrapped in some kind of Kishinesque trees- only to be broken by Maka. As she leaves after a conversation, he wonders how long he'll still be able to teach.

This is proof the madness was eating away at him very quickly.

In the manga Stein does suffer from the high amount of madness dwelling- causing him to lose his natural, common curiosity. He still tries his hardest to fight it back- like quitting smoking, thinking that if he can't quit smoking, he can't beat the madness. This shows another sign he doesn't wall to fall.

There might be signs he may want to fall into insanity- maybe to see what it's like, or to just get it over with. Sanity comes with Pros and Cons, as does insanity. Insanity may give him the freedom to dismember as well as let any absurd curiosity run free, and maybe even the promise of this, "new world" Medusa had talked about. With insanity, he could dissect all he want, allowing the monster itching in the back of his skull to run free. There would be a few Cons though- leaving Shibusen, throwing away his past memories or in the Noncannon!Animeepisode!41, "cast off his false skin". Speaking of her- if Stein were to fall into madness, he may become her insane sofa puppet- doing her bidding, as she can manipulate him easily in that state, and with his being Shibusen's strongest Meister, she could have some type of advantage to her side.

I believe I'm done with this failure of a study? owo;; I might add more once I get more information.
