People always get sad because they think they aren't perfect. They think that they aren't the best rendition of a human. Their perceived imperfections breed insecurities, which causes them to be overcome by self-image. Having friends becomes a task instead of a past-time. The mirror starts to show an enemy, they see someone who they despise; they wish that person were dead. They see themselves as the wolf in the meadow, terrorising the cute little animals.
Lying in bed, they dream of a place where they can just be alone with their ugly body. No one will see their coarse jaw, or hear their whining voice. They loath the very thought of leaving the covers in the morning because everyday is a Monday. When they sit down in class, all they hear are the voices of their peers whispering about them:
"Look at his nose. It is so huge. I feel sorry for his mum, that would have hurt."
"Oh my God, you can see her ribs! She should really start eating."
"I hate when he laughs, you can see all of his teeth and it sounds like a hyena."
Everyone falls into this trap of comparison. We see these fabricated images everywhere, broadcast seemingly into the airwaves like children's balloons. Even the reflection of the rain-bearing clouds look beautiful when we look at ourselves in the pond. We're scared because we are judged by others; but even more importantly, we are scared because we judge ourselves. Our internal language becomes full of comparatives: 'too big,' 'not enough,' underweight,' and we hate ourselves for thinking it.
But we're all wrong. Being a human means that we are different from everyone else. What use would it be if everyone was perfect? Everyone would be your friend, everyone would be your ideal partner. We would be so utterly boring. There would be no substance, no fizz that kept us going because we would have it all already.
We are all perfect. You may not look anything like the model on the front of that magazine or the presenter on the news, but you are perfect just the way you are. People only judge you because they are afraid of themselves, they are using you as a scapegoat for their own perceived imperfections.
