Musings on mythology, culture, and world peace....
Honestly I find mythology and folklore to be quite fascinating. I am particularly fond of the mythologies that tend to be overlooked by the mainstream. Such things as Celtic, Germanic, Russian, Malaysian, Philippine, Indonesian, or Assyrian myths and legends. It is reallyhard to find books on such topics. Even most internet searches will come up with primarily Greek or Roman lore with a few sites on Egyptian, Norse, or Hindu myths and legends. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean myths fall in among what's left. I can count the number of books I've found on Celtic myth on one hand, though the fact that there are few written records of said myths have more to do with that than lack of interest. It's still frustrating, though. It's not that I don't like Greek and Roman mythology, because I do, but it's just that I feel that I know enough about them to satsisfy my curiosity. I want to know more about the OTHER mythologies now. I want to learn all I can about them, so that I can better understand the cultures that created them. I want to understand because I beleive that I will be better able to function in this world if I know what makes people people. I know that a large part of what shapes a person is the culture they grow up in. If I can understand the culture, then, logically, I should be able to understand what drives that person's morals and their logic. I want to understand, so that I can maybe be part of the solution to mending the cutural divides that drive a majority of the world's wars. It is one of the ways that I beleive could bring some measure of peace to our world. Hopefully, I'm right. I really want to be right on this....
