Shadow Dancer
The time for dragons and Pegasus had passed for all but two. There was one Pegasus and one dragon left in the known world and they each had their own story that would combine into one. The Pegasus trapped on an island far away from any and the dragon free as could be, maybe a little to free, for every place he went he was chased away.
Shadow who was a shadow dragon named after the dark scales on his hide and dark coal eyes, was know for getting into mischief every where he went. It wasn’t that he was a bad dragon, just that he lacked the education to deal with other creatures. He liked to play and even thouhu he wasn’t the largest dragon in the world, matter in fact he was the smallest, he was still larger then most buildings. People just wouldn’t appreciate it when he would land in there cities and go boo or try to play hide and go seek and end up crushing a building or two in the process. They would threaten and run him off with weapons and fire.
After many years of being mistreated by these people he came to be alone and saddened by the fact he couldn’t find one of his own. He continues to search the world for the hopes of finding another. Over sky, sea, and land he went, but none he could find. He checked caves in the mountains, under water, and even burrows in the ground. He finally gave up hope after several years, lost without reason and gave the idea of searching any further. He decided it was his time to vanish as well like the rest and turned direction to find a place where he could be forgotten too.
While flying to the destination of the lost he noticed an island below. There was a tall oak tree with branches that out stretched for the sky. The leaves were green as could be. As he flew closer, the island came to life with flowers circling the tree. A small open grassy spot was open between the two. The frequent smell of pollen almost made his head swim. There was also the most beautiful creature he had ever seen asleep at the end of a heavy chain. Could it be a dragon, one of the ones he searched for.
He took a nose dive and landed in front of the creature. No, not a dragon at all, his nose could tell that it did not have the smell of a dragon. He did smell this type of creature once before, however the smell was a little different, stronger, yes, now he knew, this was a Pegasus, a female Pegasus. Oh such beauty she was too. She was glossy white with light pink hues at the wing tip and mane. Nice and prim was the tail as well with white and pink streaks. Her form was perfect with out any flaw. Yes, Shirley a sight to see and sleeping too.
He was going to have fun with this one. He crouched down with his rear in the air swaying like a cat getting ready to pounce. Forward he leapt and let out a loud thundering voice, “ BOO “. She did nothing, not even stirred. This puzzled him. He would have to check if she still lived.
Shadow gave a few more loud boos then started yelling for awhile. When that didn’t work, he nudged her with his head. She still did not wake. Then he shook her wildly, threw pebbles, and even picked her up and dropped her. She would not wake and every attempt he made would not help her. Finally he decided that maybe she would wake at nightfall. So he waited. When nightfall came her eyes did not open, so he thought to himself, “ Maybe the moon when full will wake her” , and he waited. Three weeks he waited and when the moon was full, still she would not wake. He would give her until sunrise the next day and then move on if nothing happened for his belly was growling.
As sunrise came, Shadow watched for those eyes to open. They did not, so he gathered up the best flowers he could and made a bouquet for her. Then he set them in front of her and said, “ Farewell sleeping lady, may your eternal dreams be made “. With that he turned to take flight. Shadow heard something from behind him like dirt being moved and a chain rattle. He turned for one last look.
Her bright blue eyes opened to see a creature darker then night at its fullest. A large dragon with jet black leathery wings sloping out ready for flight. A tail with fins lined from tip to back of neck ending in two menacing horns jagged up right. Perched on a long neck was a face full of delight that carried razor sharp teeth and coal black eyes. An underbelly full of shinny black shields that gave a reflection of the large form on the ground. “ Who… Who are you? “. Whispered this sweet voice.
Turning around he replied, “ I am shadow, a shadow dragon from far, far away. How did you wake? Why have you came to be like this? I tried for days to wake you, waited for weeks, and when I am to go, you suddenly come to life. Why? “.
She took in a deep breath and glanced down at the flowers then back at him. She watched as he turned around and starred with interest. Then she explained, “ I’m not sure how long I’ve been here, but my story is of sorrow and telling I will if you really wish it so “.
“ I do! Oh I do! I haven’t had a story in such a long time, will you please, but first your name lady “, he choked out.
With another deep breath she started, “ My name is Flower, Flower Jewel of the high winds herd. We were a gentle herd grazing and playing. We moved from place to place and as we moved, the two legged creatures would hunt us down and take our feathers. My herd tried to find a place safe from these creature, but they always found us. They hunted all my kind until I was the last. A group of them hunted me for my years trying to steel my feathers, but I out smarted them time and time again. I found this island and this place was beautiful, full of life and beauty; So I decided to hide here enjoying the flowers and creatures here. We played and talked for along while until one day the group hunting me found me. I tried to take flight and escape but they threw a canopy of vines over me. I thought my feathers they would have, but no. One of them stepped out and came to me. The others had bound me to this oak tree. He came to me and told me since I was such a grand pursuit that my feathers I shall keep. He refused to let me go and kept me here. For many years he came back to see me until one day when he returned he had the look of time on him. He was dying. He enchanted the lock never to release me and placed the sleeping curse upon I to never wake unless the flowers I so wished were placed at my feet. He touched the land around me so the flowers would not grow. For here is where I slept ever since until now. I have told you my story , what about yours “.
Shadow looked puzzled for a moment and then told her his story never taking his eyes off her. After that he gathered food for the both of them, then they talked and laughed. Once or twice he tried to free her but each time the chains would shock him. He tried pulling the tree up, but even with all his strength he could not. So he stayed with her making sure she had plenty of flowers around so she would not sleep again. For many days they played and talked. He even promised he would never leave her side and he would protect her until the end of time.
After many months of being together he had found that he was in love with her and she with him. She missed her wings in flight and he so wanted to fly with her as well. They dreamed of the day she would be free so they could leave and enjoy the sky.
“ I will free you. I promise with my life “, Shadow said one day. With his temper and all his strength, he took the chain in his claws getting shocked the whole time and opened his mouth. With his sharp teeth he took one powerful bite and the chain broke in half. She was free and he fell to the ground in pain. The shock was so bad it was hard for him to breath and he collapsed to the ground in agony. The chain crumbled to dust for the spell had been broken.
She leaned forward and closing her eyes she said, “ Love me true you do, for if you did not, the chains I would still hold “. A white glow came from her and his wounds quickly healed. In moments he was back on his feet. Looking at each other, he nodded his head toward the sky and she followed suite.
Both of them took for the sky. They flew circles around each other, diving, twisting, and turning in the air. She was free and even though he did not find one of his kind, he did find his mate. They both turned to the north and flew off after the first star dancing in the sky like a shadow dancer around the flame of a candles light.
