I am alone,
but not really
my eyes are two of many
many that glow with hunger
not with hate,
not with the hunger of greed,
but with a simple, primeval want,
want of food
tails wag with anticipation
jawals are licked with eagerness
then suddenly...
a sharp clean howl cuts through the night
many follow in fast succession
mussels tighten as we leap
apart and as one
dark shadows in the even darker night
it may be the end of them,
but for many of us it is the beginning
the first hunt for many and the last breath for them
eyes roll with fear
hooves stamp
snorts of pain and fear come from the
the caribou
we have followed for many a moon
claws sink in
teeth nash
they fall, we rise
we as on fell the great beasts
many pounce
skin tears fir peals
yippes of satisfaction
others must wait for we respect the fallen pray,
respect the great wolves
the great wolves who eat first
finally my turn
we pounce and ripe with teeth sharp as needles
skin tears, fur peals
teeth drip with blood
howls split the silence
I am...
... we are...
wolves
as one and apart.

It's funny how the smallest piece can make the biggest difference.
