I have just recently began this awesome anime, and am on episode 20. God, this thing ROCKS. Even though I tend to avoid history based anime because history is just plain confusing, I understand this one.
The main character(supposedly) is a young 17 year old man named Akidzuki Yojiro who weilds a special sword called a "Moontear Sword". It's purpose is to destroy the Lord's Head, the head of a corrupt general that appears in war and causes great calamity. The one who weilds a "Moontear Sword" is called the Eternal Assasin, forever bound to destroy the Lord's head.
The series is set in the Bakumatsu era, with the Shogunate being in its final years, and war fast approaching. The Europeans and the New Imperial Army are allied together, bent on crushing the rebel alliance that formed to combat them. And let me tell you, they're pwning them real good. Somewhere in the ranks of the New Imperial Army sits Nakaiya Jūbē, a cunning war general who had mysteriously disappeared a few months before. He had possesion of the Lord's Head.
Akidzuki goes after him and meets the Yuyama troupe, a group of people bent on revenge on Nakaiya Jūbē disguised as actors. The leader, Kokunojo, had her parents killed in front of her and her friend, Ebisu in one of Nakaiya's 'purges'. Akidzuki reluctantly travels with them, using them to get closer to the ever elusive Nakaiya Jūbē. However, his path to the elusive General was blocked by Kanna Sakyōnosuke, Nakaiya's bodyguard. Armed with two pistols and the skills to use them effectively, he was a formidable opponent for Akidzuki and the troupe.
Another face was troubling Akidzuki: Ibaragi Sōtetsu, the playwrite for the Yuyama troupe. Knowing far too much about the country's internal affairs, he was under watch by many powerful people. He used his plays to expose the intentions of the group and their true enemy. Soon, when the Lord's Head is finally in Akidzuki's grasp, as is the Yayuma Troupe's revenge, Sotetsu disappears, along with the Lord's Head.
Sotetsu begins mailing parts of his new script to the Troupe, who are willing to follow his words to no ends. The play requires the preformance of Nakaiya Jūbē, and the 'Eternal Assasin'. Not knowing how they are going to get the two on stage, the troupe preforms. In a chain of mysterious events, they catch Nakaiya with the Lord's Head in front of the audience and the Troupe fights for their revenge.
Just when all seems well, the British navy interferes, blasting cannonballs into the fray. In his frantic attempt to kill Nakaiya, Ebisu and Nakaiya are both lost in the mess. The Lord's Head possesses the leader of the fleet, Enemoto, and flees north. Akidzuki leaves the troupe behind and gives chase. Also abandoning the troupe is Kakunojo, who had fallen for the samurai during their travels.
Meeting up shortly after her departure, they head north together. They meet new faces and new situations. In a hidden cave behind a waterfall in a shrine, Kakunojo discovers another 'Moontear Sword' like Akidzuki's. She clings onto it, saying it 'called to her'. When finally facing Enemoto on board his ship, the truth of Kakunojo's sword is revealed. Her sword, called the Yang Kodachi in the ancient scrolls, was the opposite of Akidzuki's sword, the Yin Oodachi. While the Yin Oodachi was created to destroy the Lord's Head, Yang Kodachi was created to protect it. Oblivious to this, Kakunojo carries it in Enemoto's presance. The Lord's Head easily posesses her, and, fufilling her sword's role, she stabs Akidzuki from behind. He falls off the boat and into the raging sea.

And that's all I've got. I still need to watch the rest... you should have seen my face when Kokunojo stabbed Akidzuki-sama... I wanted to strangle her.
